Middle School

Applying to Classes 6-8

Class 6 is a natural entry point when 50-55 places are offered.

Parent/Guardian meetings are available only for who are new to the admission process. A meeting is not offered to families who currently have children at the school, have a recent graduate, or have previously had a parent meeting for any child. Your meeting, if applicable, and your child's interview will be scheduled for the same date and time. While we aim to include a parent/guardian meeting for all applicants new to our admission process, those who submit applications after November 13 may not be guaranteed one due to the limited availability of interview slots. While the application officially closes on December 4, we encourage families to submit their application by the priority deadline of November 13. A member of the Admission Office staff will contact you to schedule your parent/guardian meeting.

Please note that while you are able to take the ISEE twice (once from August to November and again December to January), St. John's will only accept one ISEE score report. The report must come from a test date during the current admission cycle and must be received by January 8. Please do not send more than one report. You are not required to take the ISEE at St. John's. Please choose a testing site and testing date that is convenient for your family.

Though Classes 7 and 8 are not natural entry points, one to two openings may occur at each class through attrition. At the end of the selection process, a small wait pool is created for each class in the event an opening occurs.

Applicants to Classes 6-8 are considered on the following criteria:
  • Current teacher recommendations (math and English)
  • Administrator Recommendation
  • Academic record (mid-year report card and previous year report card)
  • ISEE test results
  • Student interview
  • Writing sample/Applicant Questionnaire
  • Extracurricular recommendation (optional)

International Families and Out-of-Town Applicants

We look forward to working with families moving to Houston from other areas of the United States and other countries. We understand that the admission process may present some challenges given your circumstances. We encourage you to submit an application as soon as possible so that we may assist you with the admission process.

Out-of-town families applying for Classes 2–11 can complete the process without coming to campus. All testing can be done out of state and we can help facilitate. Additionally, interviews and parent/guardian meetings can be completed over video chat.

Out-of-town families applying for Kindergarten and Class 1 need to be on campus for their group evaluation. Kindergarten evaluations will be conducted in January. Kindergarten applicants will receive notification in mid-September of your scheduled date and time. Class 1 evaluations will be conducted in December. We require out-of-town families for Kindergarten and Class 1 to have the WPPSI administered by CATS. If you have questions, please contact Tahra Peterson at 713-850-4119.

Out-of-town families for Classes 2-4 can schedule testing in their local area. Testing results must be received by January 8.

As a day school, St. John's policy requires that students reside with a parent, stepparent, or legal guardian. We do not offer a program for international students and do not issue I-20 visas.
