The Boys Soccer team defeated ESD Fri. morning in the first round of the SPC DI Tournament in a long, intense battle for a surprise victory.

The day started full of setbacks for the Mavericks, first with the bracket and then with the weather.

The soccer boys were seeded fourth for South Zone Division 1 (last for the entire Division 1) and were thus pitted against the undefeated ESD soccer team (first in Division 1). Expectations and spirits were low.

To add to the misfortune, the sky chose to rain on the majority of Houston, further dampening our soccer team's spirits. The game had to be moved from the boy's home field to Awty International School.

Basically, the world seemed gungho for making life for the Maverick soccer boys harder -- that is, until James Fallon ('12) scored the first goal of the game. Maverick fans in the bleachers went wild, relieved their expedition in the cold and the wet weather was paying off.

ESD caught up in the second half of the game, managing to catch the Mavs off-guard and score a goal. From then on out, the Maverick defense shut out ESD, despite the constant attempts to score.

Goalie Andrew Warden ('14) and defenders Andre Gras ('13), Ned Lu ('12), Jared Lichtarge ('12), and Patrick Harrel ('12) did a great job keeping ESD from scoring.

Matthew Kreutter ('14) and Fred Lang ('14) controlled the midfield well, taking possession of the ball several times for the forwards.

With SJS and ESD tied at one at the end of the game, the game went to overtime twice and then penalty shots. Fallon, Lichtarge, Gras, Matthew Davis ('15), and Lang all kicked penalty kicks.

Mavericks triumphed, as Warden blocked one more shot than ESD's goalie did, making the score in penalty kicks 4-3.
